To fuel interest in the tuner packages and special editions, Subaru debuted an STI Performance Concept car this month at the New York auto show. It not only showcases STI’s potential but foreshadows an STI edition of theBRZ sporty coupe due in America.
Subaru Tecnica International has been around since 1988. But Subaru now aims to step up marketing of its offerings to build performance cred as part of parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.’s 2020 business goal of enhancing overall brand value.
“The United States is the highest priority for STI,” STI President Yoshio Hirakawa said here. “We’d like to create a car that drivers can control like their own legs so they can push the car to the limit.”
The redoubled focus is part of a wider trend among Japanese brands to cultivate a name for sporty, not just utilitarian, cars. Toyota plans to expand its Toyota Racing Development line. Nissan is doing likewise with its Nismo editions. Honda released a redesigned Civic Type R hot hatch with 300-plus hp.
Subaru’s STI business has three pillars: Complete cars, performance parts and motorsports. STI editions usually mix and match special chassis tuning, responsive steering, heavy-duty brakes, bigger wheels, aero kits and pipped engines.
In the U.S., the biggest market for complete STI vehicles, Subaru sold 6,500 WRX STIs in 2014. It was the only STI model offered.
Subaru unveiled the 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan and five-door hatchback to automotive press during the New York International Auto Show on March 23 and 24. The compact car will be the newest model built at the company’s plant in Lafayette.
The models will be the first Imprezas built in the United States. Previously, the cars were assembled at plants in Japan and Malaysia.
In September 2015, Subaru announced a 1,200-worker expansion in Lafayette as the company prepared to increase production by 100,000 vehicles annually. Hiring is expected to continue through this year, Tom Easterday, executive vice president of Subaru of Indiana Automotive said.
The new 2017 Subaru Impreza is the first model to use Subaru’s Global Platform architecture, which will soon be the underpinning of many future Subaru cars and sport utility vehicles.
There will be four trim lines offered: 2.0i base, Premium, Sport and Limited, according to Subaru of America. There was no mention of a higher-performance WRX or STi model.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza should roll off the assembly line and into dealer showrooms at the end of the year.

Though the base price is on the lower end compared to rivals, the standard engine proves to be underwhelming if you have a full load of passengers or cargo. Subaru offers a more powerful engine, but at a hefty price increase. That being said, the all new Subaru Outback in Ohio is still definitely worth the money either way.

Subaru is probably most well known as a company that makes all-wheel-drive vehicles that appeal heavily to campers, skiers and off-road rally racers. But even if you’re the type who won’t venture anywhere that doesn’t have a shower, there are still many reasons to consider the 2016 Subaru Impreza in Dayton OH.
For starters, it is pretty much your only choice for a small sedan or hatchback if you want all-wheel drive. The Subaru Impreza in Dayton OH comes standard with it, and that extra dose of traction in inclement weather can be a nice thing to have. But there’s also a spacious, nicely designed cabin with a rear seat that’s among the roomiest in the segment and a well-tuned suspension that nicely buffers passengers from jolts and bumps, yet also provides steady and secure handling around turns. Other bonuses of the Subaru Impreza in Dayton OH include a plentiful list of standard features and excellent crash test scores
The Subaru Impreza in Dayton OH does have a few faults. However the 2016 Subaru Impreza remains a solid bet for the driver who wants a family-friendly compact car that maintains its composure in unpleasant weather. Not to mention the fact that its probably the most fun you can have on four wheels.
